Research

In order to implement monetary policy and carry out business operations effectively, the Bank conducts research on economic and financial conditions as well as the financial system and financial markets.

The findings are published in the Bank's various reports including the Outlook Report (the Outlook for Economic Activity and Prices), the Financial System Report, the Payment and Settlement Systems Report, the Regional Economic Report, the Bank of Japan Working Paper Series, the Bank of Japan Review Series, and the Bank of Japan Research Laboratory Series. These publications are also available on the Bank's web site.

Studies

In addition, the Bank conducts theoretical and empirical studies of fundamental financial and economic issues. Studies conducted from medium- to long-term perspectives are used in establishing an appropriate background for the Bank's policies and business operations. The fields covered by these studies range from economics, financial engineering, law, accounting, and advanced financial technology to the history of finance and currency.

Findings from these studies are published in the Bank's various reports including the Monetary and Economic Studies and the Institute for Monetary and Economic Studies (IMES) Discussion Paper Series. They are also available on the web site of the IMES.

Surveys

The Bank conducts an opinion poll, the Opinion Survey on the General Public's Views and Behavior, to gain insight into the public's perceptions and behavior, in particular, the impression of economic conditions, general mindset, and perception of the price level, as well as to grasp the degree to which the public is aware of the Bank's policies and operations.

The survey is part of the Bank's public relations activities. The Bank makes use of the public's comments/opinions and requests obtained via its public relations activities at the Head Office and branches to improve its conduct of policies and business operations.
