Replacement of Long-Term Time-Series Data in Regional Balance of Payments Statistics in Line with the Revision of the Methodology for Measuring Sea Freight Fares

August 1, 2006
Bank of Japan
International Department

Long-term time-series data included in "Summary Table" and "Services, Income, Current Transfers" in "Regional Balance of Payments (through Dec. 2004/Semiannually/before the revision of the compilation method for Transportation)" will be replaced with data based on the revised methodology for measuring sea freight fares on August 16, 2006, following the release of regional data for the first quarter of 2006.

At the same time, all semiannual data series in Regional Balance of Payments will be replaced with quarterly data series.

In line with these replacements, "Regional Balance of Payments (through Dec. 2004/Semiannually/before the revision of the compilation method for Transportation)", will be renamed "Regional Balance of Payments (Quarterly)."1

  1. Data series in "Regional Balance of Payments (Quarterly)," which comprise data from the first quarter of 2004 to the fourth quarter of 2005, will be integrated into the new "Regional Balance of Payments (Quarterly)."

The replacements should enhance usability of data on the Bank's web site. Data series in the new "Regional Balance of Payments (Quarterly)" will be based on the same methodology for measuring sea freight fares as in the new series of "Balance of Payments (After the revision of the statistical treatment of financial derivatives (from Jan. 1996))," released in July 2006.2
